I think that there is always the option in this situation to paraphrase.
That way you are able to convey the message that your source was trying to get across,without ruining the overall value of your article with bad grammar and what not.
I don't really agree with changing your sources words.i know if i was interviewed and the reporter changed my words to better suit there article I would be quite unhappy with the resulting article.
So,summarizing and paraphrasing,while citing the source,seems to be the best option.that way your source is heard,and the credibility of your article remains high.
Unless you right a crappy article,then all the paraphrasing in the world won't save you.
